Vonetta Booker-Brown’s my name, a self-proclaimed "tri-state area writer chick" wielding a big pen and creative words. And Triscene.com is the space in which I represent them. Since graduating from Southern CT. State University in 1999 with
a BS in journalism, I’ve written for magazines such as Essence and
Essence.com, Honey, XXL, and contributed to newspapers like Fairfield
County Weekly, Stamford Advocate, Umojaa News and New Haven
Register. (Click here to see the entire list
of my published print articles.) And
what’s Triscene.com all about? Designed,
written and launched in February 2000 by yours truly, it was originally
an urban culture magazine for the NY, NJ and CT tri-state area, giving
visitors access to dope artists, interesting goings-on and
sometimes-quirky current issues—with that all-important underground
flavor, of course. But
as time went on, the dilemma arose—a writer chick’s act of juggling
the freelance hustle, securing gigs and chasing down paychecks with
running and promoting a large Web-zine (well, large for one person).
It gets hard sometimes, people! The
solution: I’ve rearranged Triscene.com—just a
bit. It still features some of the “urban lifestyle” articles and
commentary visitors have become used to, but it’s now also produced from a
standpoint of, “I’m Vonetta Booker-Brown, freelance writer—and this is
what I do.” I figured
that since you good folks (and editors, hello…) are
nice enough to visit, the least I can do is show you some of what it is
that I do. For my fellow writers, I’ll also be picking apart the editorial/magazine/freelance writing deal, interviewing editors, and posting links to some of my favorite freelance resource sites. You can also check out my published articles (in text format), the Triscene.com archives (don’t worry, I’ve saved them for you)—or you can simply go Home and begin browsing the site from there. It’s all on you. And feel free to drop me a line at hollaback@triscene.com. The Roots’ CD Things Fall Apart is playing right now, rocking the track “Act Too (The Love of My Life). And nothing could have been spoken better when they said: " My
sentiments, exactly—sometimes, that’s the only thing left to do.
By now, that
slice of sweet potato pie's probably been reduced to a plateful of graham
cracker crumbs, but I'm not mad. Just go get yourself another slice,
come back, and get comfortable in front of the monitor again. Now
that you know what I'm about, come along for the ride. It’s going to be quite interesting. Peace and Love, Vonetta
